About this port
YouTube video player
God of War: Betrayal brings Kratos’ battles to a side-scrolling adventure: chain-blade combat, magic, platforming, chests, switches and encounters with creatures such as Argos and the mounted Dead Riders. This project adapts the Java game’s maps, sprites, animation and event data to a native 240 × 160 GBA presentation.
This is an unofficial fan port by Game Translate. It includes the ten-stage story and the original Arena map, with GBA controls and new interface work. It is a game build rather than a translation patch.

What’s in the GBA edition
Campaign and score challenges
Play the ten story stages or choose Arena from the title menu. Arena keeps its own best score and does not replace your story checkpoint.
Automatic checkpoint saves
Checkpoints write to cartridge SRAM. Choose Continue at the title menu to resume your saved progress, upgrades and difficulty.
Three ways to play
Press A on Play Game, then use Left/Right to choose Normal, Hard or Nightmare. Hard and Nightmare increase enemy health and damage and add evasive moves and counterattacks.
Vietnamese text and menus
Vietnamese joins English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese. Press A on Language, then use Left/Right to switch in the same menu row.
New title and chapter artwork
A new title screen, stage-introduction artwork and ending art accompany the adventure. Contextual prompts and remaining-enemy counters help show when an interaction or sealed encounter needs attention.
Original theme and effects
The Java MIDI theme now plays at the title and main menu. Ten converted effects cover menu confirmation, blade and sword swings, impacts and landing. Combat effects stream directly from ROM through GBA audio DMA.
Controls & saves
| BUTTON | ACTION |
|---|---|
| D-pad | Move; follow directional prompts during QTEs |
| A | Jump; press again for a double jump. Confirm menu choices. |
| B | Attack and chain combos; use the selected magic. Back in menus. |
| Down | Open chests, grip objects, guard or grab a weakened enemy, depending on context |
| Up | Climb, use chain hooks and operate levers when prompted |
| R | Choose a weapon or magic |
| Start | Open the title menu or pause during play |
| Select | Open Power Up to spend red orbs |
For a QTE, release the previous direction before pressing the next arrow. For a mounted Dead Rider, a finisher is optional: a downed rider can get back up, and ordinary attacks can also defeat it.
The red reservoir in Power Up represents upgrade currency, not Kratos’ health. Upgrading consumes red orbs; the reservoir drains as they are spent.
How to play
- Download and extract the ZIP. Open the included
.gbafile in your GBA emulator. The package includes a readme with controls and compatibility notes. - Press Start at the title screen. Choose Play Game, select a difficulty with Left/Right and confirm with A. Language can also be changed inline.
- Let the emulator save SRAM. Checkpoints save automatically. Keep its
.savfile so Continue can restore your progress. Close the emulator normally so its save file is flushed to disk.
Updating from an earlier build? Back up your existing .sav. Rename a copy to match the new ROM filename and place it in your emulator’s save folder. v27–v29 saves load as Normal; v30–v31 saves retain their stored difficulty. Use the cartridge save for migration; old-version save states are not compatible.
Known limitations & bug reports
- Compatibility: tested in mGBA. Real GBA hardware, flash cartridges and other emulators have not yet been verified.
- Audio: the original MIDI files are rendered with General MIDI instruments, then converted to 8-bit mono at 8,192 Hz. They will sound different from a particular Java phone. The theme plays at the title/main menu; gameplay uses one effect at a time, so a new effect may replace an earlier one.
- Loading: short black transitions can occur while title, chapter or other static artwork is decompressed.
- Presentation: the GBA’s smaller screen and colour conversion make this an adaptation rather than a pixel-for-pixel copy of the Java display.
Collision, camera, animation and progression have been tested along scripted routes, but unexplored edge cases can remain. If something goes wrong, leave a comment with build version, stage, difficulty, emulator or hardware, and the steps to reproduce it. A screenshot and a copy of the checkpoint save are helpful.
FAQ
Do I need a patcher, another ROM or a Java emulator?
No. This download is a playable GBA build. Extract it and open the .gba file in a GBA emulator.
Why is Continue unavailable?
Continue becomes available when the game finds a valid checkpoint save. Check that the emulator is writing SRAM and that the save’s filename matches the ROM. Arena records are separate from story progress.
Does the download include the rumoured Underworld map?
No playable Underworld stage was found in the source and Java resource set used for this port. The included content is the ten story stages and Arena.
Is this an official GBA release?
No. This is an unofficial fan project by Game Translate, adapting the Java game to GBA. It is not endorsed by Sony or Nintendo.

Ohhh… This is a port of the J2ME title (S40), right? I still frequently play these kinds of games, especially puzzles by Gameloft, on my Nokia 206 or Nokia 301. These particular models allow you to play games directly from a microSD card without needing to install them. Why did you choose to port this specific title? The Gameloft ones are the best. In any case, well done! Another great achievement, chief! 💪

Haha, I was just experimenting with it for fun! Someone had already done the decompilation work, so I figured I’d use that as a reference and try porting it to the GBA. Plus, God of War is a pretty well-known franchise, so I thought quite a few people might be interested in it.
Funny enough, I’m not even that big of a GoW fan myself. 😂 Super Robot Wars is still my true passion and the main series I’m dedicated to working on.
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement! 💪
