About the game
YouTube video player
Super Robot Taisen R (Super Robot Wars R) is the second Super Robot Wars on the Game Boy Advance. You play Raul or Fiona Grayden, test pilot of the Excellence, a prototype that swaps Frames for every situation and runs on the experimental Time Flow Engine. A weapons test on the Moon goes wrong, a Boson Jump throws the team into the past, and suddenly the heroes are fighting alongside crews they shouldn’t even be able to meet.
The cast is one of the most varied in the series: Char’s Counterattack, Gundam ZZ, Gundam X, Gundam W Endless Waltz, G Gundam, both Nadesico stories (the TV series and Prince of Darkness), GEAR Fighter Dendoh, Neo Getter Robo and Shin Getter, Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger, Combattler V, Voltes V, Daitarn 3, Zambot 3 and Texas Mack. Five route splits, two heroes and a dozen secret units give plenty of reasons to play it more than once.

What’s translated
What’s new in the patch
A font made for English
The game’s text boxes, menus and battle windows use a new variable-width font, so long pilot and unit names (Mass Production ν Gundam, Excellence Cosmodriver) fit without abbreviations wherever the screen allows it.
Anim ON / OFF
The battle forecast keeps the original animation switch, now labelled Anim. With animations off, the quick map battles show English effect labels too.
Official names
Pilots, mechs and attacks use the names from official English releases of each series (Gundam, Nadesico, Getter, Mazinger and more), checked series by series.
Rename in English
The name entry screen has an English keyboard. Nicknames can be 7 letters, the Excellence 13 and your team 17.
How to patch
- Get a clean Japanese ROM. You need your own dump of Super Robot Taisen R (Japan): 8 MB (8,388,608 bytes). Check it before patching:
CRC32 DF7F91BCSHA-1 ab96d573933598e6cbea19654a0e5cf85d746ba2
We can’t share ROMs, so please don’t ask. - Download and unzip the patch. Inside is
Super Robot Taisen R (English) v1.2.1.ipsand a readme. - Apply the IPS. The easiest way is Rom Patcher JS in your browser: choose the ROM, choose the .ips, click Apply patch. On desktop you can also use Floating IPS (Flips).
- Check the result. The patched ROM is 8.5 MB (it was expanded to fit the English text):
CRC32 C82BC3BFSHA-1 70c78be1215a7b19feaee37cc3c5057f99621a00 - Play. Tested in mGBA. Any accurate GBA emulator should work, and so should a flash cart on real hardware.
Updating from an older build? Always patch a fresh copy of the clean Japanese ROM, never a ROM you already patched. Your in-game save (.sav) carries over. Emulator save states made with older builds keep the old text on screen until the game redraws it, so make a normal save before switching.
Known issues
- The big Super Robot Taisen R logo on the title screen is kept in Japanese, as on the box art.
- The story has been checked scenario by scenario with debug tools, but not every combination of routes has been played start to finish yet.
Found a typo or a line that reads oddly? Leave a comment below with where it happened (a screenshot helps) and it’ll be fixed.
Guides for this game
We also wrote a full English guide from the game’s own event scripts, using the same names as the patch:
- Complete walkthrough: all 37 stages on every route, with annotated battle maps and every part enemies carry
- Missables: secret units and boss parts, sorted by deadline
- Secret units: every hidden recruit and the exact condition the game checks
- Secrets & hidden mechanics: routes, endings and cut content
FAQ
Is the translation complete?
Yes. Every story line, every battle quote and every menu is in English, on every route and for both heroes.
Raul or Fiona?
Both are fully translated. The story is the same, the dialogue and the final Excellence differ. The walkthrough covers both.
Why is the patched ROM bigger than the original?
English takes more space than Japanese, so the ROM is expanded from 8 MB to 8.5 MB, only as much as the English text needs.
The game shows a white screen or garbage.
Check the patched ROM against the CRC32 above. If it doesn’t match, your original ROM was not the clean Japanese version, or it was already patched.
Can I upload the patch to another site?
Not without permission. Please share the link to this page instead, so everyone gets the latest version. If you’d like to host or mirror it, email gametranslate.us@gmail.com. Pre-patched ROMs must never be shared: the game itself still belongs to Banpresto and the rights holders.

Changelog
v1.2.1 · October 10, 2026
- Menus that still used the old blocky font now use the new font too: the location box in dialogue scenes, the intermission menu (with the stage title, turns and funds labels) and the route choice box.
- Smaller patched ROM: 8.5 MB instead of 16 MB. The ROM is now expanded only as much as the English text needs.
- Saves keep working. Apply v1.2.1 to a clean Japanese ROM.
v1.2 · October 10, 2026
- New font. Story dialogue and battle quotes now use a redrawn proportional font (cleaner letters, real descenders, proper apostrophes and commas), the same family as the menus. Far more text fits on a line, so sentences are no longer chopped into short pieces, with about 28% fewer text boxes in the story.
- Combination attacks fixed. Combination and multi-stage attacks (Voltes V + Combattler V, Zambot 3 + Daitarn 3, Mazinger double attacks, Satellite Cannons, G Gundam finishers and more) could show other pilots’ faces and quotes in their follow-up lines. The 432 missing follow-up lines are now translated. Thanks to the players who reported it!
- Saves keep working. Apply v1.2 to a clean Japanese ROM.
v1.1 · October 4, 2026
- Full story polish. About 3,200 lines rewritten across all 51 scenarios so the dialogue reads like natural English while staying faithful to the Japanese. Stiff, literal and Japanese-style phrasing is gone, and every character keeps their own voice.
- Consistency pass. Scenes that repeat (route copies, recaps, flashbacks) now read the same every time. Names, ranks and terms are unified across the whole script.
- Wordplay adapted so jokes and puns land in English.
- Battle quotes: Boss’s lines reworked, and a few lines matched to the story.
- Fixes: a rare freeze in the text engine is fixed, and the website address no longer shows over the opening crawl (it stays on the title screen only).
- Saves from v1.0 keep working. Apply v1.1 to a clean Japanese ROM, not to a ROM already patched with v1.0.
v1.0 · October 1, 2026
- First public release.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I have to enable ads to help keep the hosting running. I only earn about $10 per 1,000 views, and since the site is still new, most people are understandably hesitant to donate yet. So unfortunately, I don’t really have another option right now.

I hope you can understand, and I’d really appreciate it if you could follow the download instructions provided.
Once again, I’m sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your understanding and support.

The font used in the dialogue/battle text boxes needs to be changed to the one on the units screen. The current one is much too sloppy and doesnt fit correctly leading to sentences getting chopped up.
Game Translate Author
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll check the dialogue and battle text again, especially the places where the text is getting cut off. I’ll also compare the current font with the one used on the Units screen and see which solution works best.
If possible, could you also upload a screenshot of the text that gets cut off? That would help me identify exactly where the problem is happening.
Really appreciate you pointing this out.
MountainGoat Bug Hunter
@Game Translate Maybe cut off is a bad way to describe it. Its moreso that due to the large font size longer sentences get cut up into multiple text boxes, making it a bit choppy to read sometimes. If you use a smaller text font like the one from the unit menu it would probably help alot.
Game Translate Author
Yeah, I get what you mean now. I agree that the font itself could definitely be improved. I’ve been looking at some of the nicer fonts used in other well-known fan translations to see what works well, and I’m planning to improve it in the next patch.
As for longer lines being split across multiple text boxes, though, that’s unfortunately something I don’t really want to solve by shortening the translation. My main priority is to keep the English as faithful as possible to the original Japanese, without cutting meaning, while still making sure the dialogue sounds natural and each character keeps their proper personality and way of speaking.
Because of that, some lines are simply going to need more than one text box. I’d rather have an extra box or two than trim down the dialogue too much just to make everything fit into one.
Hope that makes sense, and I really appreciate the feedback!

As for me, I’ve reached Chapter 10 and haven’t seen any cut-off text; if a sentence is too long, it gets split up and displayed in full across subsequent panels. The font, while quirky, is more readable than the one in SRWD, which is too thin, especially on real hardware.

Weird battle text issue!
Oddly enough, during the Voltes/Combattler combination attack, phrases and portraits of two Aestivalis pilots appear; the same applies to the Zambot/Daitarn attack, where Boss appears and speaks.
Game Translate Author
Could you please share some screenshots showing these issues? I’d like to see exactly where the incorrect portraits and dialogue appear so I can investigate and fix them. Thanks for reporting this!

@Game Translate Sorry. It’s too tricky! I don’t play on an emulator; I play on a handheld console (DS Lite). I already explained it clearly: the Daitarn 3 + Zambot 3 “combination attack” during the combat dialogue.
It’s difficult to take a photo of the moving image. Perhaps other gamers will report the same issue later, even on an emulator.
NikoKaro Bug HunterRegular
@NikoKaro Anyway, in the next stage, I triggered the Zambot+Daitarn “combination attack” twice, and the dialogue was correct this time. 🤷
