How smiths upgrade your gear, every price, every armor value and every shop, read from the ROM.

In Lord of Paladin you rarely buy a new sword. Adeu starts with a Knife and Leather Armor, and the smiths turn them into better models as he grows. Shops sell the extras: magic swords, ninja arts, shields and gauntlets that block ailments, herbs and tools. Everything on this page comes from the game’s data: the smith script, the price table and the armor table.

How smith upgrades work

Weapon shops offer Temper weapons! and armor shops Repair armor!, for 100 G each. The smith looks at the gear of whoever is leading the party (switch with L/R) and checks that character’s level:

1–10	Fixes it (“still in fine shape” / “worn, but it’ll hold”). No upgrade yet.
11+	Upgrades the starting piece to the 2nd model
21+	2nd → 3rd model
31+	3rd → 4th model
41+	4th → 5th model
51+	5th → Mithril model at most smiths; at Dradd (weapons) and Gladd (armor) the best gear in the game instead

One step per visit. Each step happens once; at level 51 with a Knife you need five visits.
Save the last step for the right smith. No smith upgrades a Mithril piece. At level 51, take the Great Sword and Mithril Shuriken to Dradd in Pafuricia Town (Holy Tempest, Ninto Blade) and the Suit Armor and Chainmail Shirt to Gladd in Mithril Town (Sordin Shield, Sordin Gauntlet). Anywhere else you get the Mithril piece and lose the better one for good.
You always pay 100 G, upgrade or not.
Only Adeu and Sarutobi have upgradeable gear.
Smiths that upgrade: Westguns, Onion Town, West Hill, Friedel Town, Mithril Town (armor) and Pafuricia Town (weapons). The dwarf shops and North Hill don’t.

From the game code: the smith’s check (script op 58) compares a level band the game stores whenever a character levels up (bands at 11, 21, 31, 41 and 51). Tested in an emulator with the Westguns smith.

The last two columns are alternatives for the same, once-only step: whichever smith does it first decides what you get.

Armor and ailments

DP is the defense value from the armor table. A shield (Adeu) or gauntlet (Sarutobi) blocks one ailment; the Ashiria pair blocks all four. The Sordin Shield and Sordin Gauntlet are body armor despite their names: they come from the level-51 step at Gladd’s Armory.

Tools: equip them to use them

Tools and key items only work from the Item slot (X → Status → a character → the 4th slot). Some count for anyone in the party, some only for the party leader or for Adeu and Sarutobi.

Weapons

ATK is the weapon’s attack value from the game’s weapon tables; the Status screen shows the character’s base attack and the total (base + weapon), e.g. 5/13 for Adeu with the Knife early in the game. Adeu uses the swords and the three Smash swords; Sarutobi uses shuriken, ninjato and the ninja Arts. Holy Tempest and Ninto Blade only come from Dradd’s level-51 tempering.

Written for Game Translate from our own work on the English patch: the full English script (every line cited by its record), data read straight from the ROM (maps, exits, chests, shop stock, prices, armor stats, the smith and tournament rules), and tests in an emulator (controls, saving, chests, hidden levers, the World Map, the maps themselves). Route and boss notes were cross-checked against the two GameFAQs guides: Rough Hike by SuperJoshua (2021) and FAQ (Incomplete) by Steven Bruck (1999).
