About the game

YouTube video player

Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba (Legend of the Sword Hero Yaiba) is a Super Famicom adaptation of Gosho Aoyama’s manga Yaiba. Yaiba Kurogane, a wild samurai boy raised in the jungle, now lives with Sayaka Mine and Rai Tatsugami. When his rival Onimaru picks up the Fujin Sword and becomes a real oni, Yaiba climbs Mt. Tengu, draws the legendary Raijin Sword and takes on Onimaru’s Eight Oni one by one.

It plays as a top-down action RPG: you fight in real time on the map, but every hit earns experience, and allies such as Musashi, Kojiro and Jubei join along the way. After Onimaru’s castle, the game opens up into a hunt across Japan for seven legendary orbs, from Hokkaido to Mt. Aso, that lead to the Dragon Orb. A friend can join in as Rai in 2-player mode.

New features

🗺️EXPLORATION

Area map

Press SELECT on the field (R if you use controller TYPE B) to see the whole area: paths, exits, shops, your position and every unopened treasure chest or hidden stone. Opened ones disappear from the map. Press B to close it. Shops, houses and one-screen rooms have no map.

📜MAPS

Hanging Scroll, redrawn

The scroll’s map of Japan, which you use to travel during the orb hunt, now fills the whole screen with an English compass instead of a small picture between two rods.

💬DIALOGUE

Real English text

The game’s font had no lowercase letters. The patch adds lowercase and punctuation drawn to match it, so dialogue reads naturally, with the speaker’s name at the start of each line.

🔤MENUS

Names that fit

Menus stay in the game’s capitals. Long names such as KIKUICHIMONJI or TSUBAMEGAESHI use a narrow capital font only where the normal one doesn’t fit, so nothing is cut short.

Controls added by the patch

How to patch

  1. Get a clean Japanese ROM. You need your own dump of Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba (Japan): 1.5 MB, no copier header. Check it before patching:
    CRC32 91FE7070
    SHA-1 a3c391d3ae370467b8af9fd91a430e8b6098f9da
If the file is 1,573,376 bytes it has a 512-byte header; remove it first (Rom Patcher JS can do this for you). We can’t share ROMs, so please don’t ask.
  2. Download and unzip the patch. Inside are Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba (English) v1.0.bps, the same patch as an .ips, and a readme.
  3. Apply the BPS. The easiest way is Rom Patcher JS in your browser: choose the ROM, choose the .bps, click Apply patch. The BPS checks your ROM and refuses a wrong one. On desktop you can also use Floating IPS (Flips). The .ips works too, but doesn’t check your ROM.
  4. Check the result. The patched ROM is 2 MB (expanded from 1.5 MB to fit the English text and the maps):
    CRC32 214C8902
    SHA-1 39e4c6929a6db81cb010bbcaf234fac5d9c0167e
  5. Play. The patched game is a standard 2 MB LoROM, so any accurate emulator (Mesen, bsnes, ares, Snes9x) and flash carts such as the FXPak Pro or EverDrive should run it.

Updating from an older build? Always patch a fresh copy of the clean Japanese ROM, never a ROM you already patched. Your in-game save (.srm) carries over; emulator save states made with older builds can show broken text or maps, so save at Grandma’s, an inn or a save statue before switching.

Known issues

  • A few shop signs painted into the town graphics are still in Japanese.
  • The area map isn’t available in shops, houses and one-screen rooms.

FAQ

Is the translation complete?

Yes for all text: every line of dialogue, every menu, item and orb description, from the opening to the ending. The only Japanese left is a few shop signs painted into the town graphics.

Why is the patched ROM bigger than the original?

English takes more space than Japanese, and the area map needs room for its data, so the ROM is expanded from 1.5 MB to 2 MB. It is still an ordinary LoROM game, the same size the original cartridge header already declares.

My emulator shows a black screen or the patcher refuses my ROM.

Check your original ROM against the CRC32 above. If it doesn’t match, it is not the clean Japanese version, or it still has a 512-byte header. The BPS patch refuses any other ROM on purpose.

Where is the Light Orb?

It only appears at night, from 00:00 to 04:59 game time, beside Osaka Onimaru Castle. The Secrets page has screenshots.

Can I upload the patch to another site?

Not without permission. Please share the link to this page instead, so everyone gets the latest version. If you’d like to host or mirror it, email gametranslate.us@gmail.com. Pre-patched ROMs must never be shared: the game itself still belongs to Banpresto.
