About the game

YouTube video player

Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight: Lord of Paladin is the Super Famicom game of Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight, Sunrise’s 1994 anime about Adeu Waltham, a knight-in-training who dreams of becoming the Lightspeed Paladin. The game opens with the Great Sage Naji turning up out of nowhere and handing Adeu a gift: Zephyr, a Ryu Knight of his very own.

From there it’s a free-roaming action RPG across the twelve areas of Earthtia, the Realm of the Sword. You fight on foot in real time, summon Zephyr with SELECT for the big battles, and pick up Paffy, Izumi and Sarutobi on the way to the Grand Tournament at Earth’s Blade. Outlaw towns, a sunken lake town, a snowbound village of beasts, a goblin mine and a flying whale castle stand in between, and so do Delias, the fiend Hellreet and the Black Knight Galden.

What’s translated

Story & dialogue100%

Every message in the script, more than 1,300 of them, including all the choice menus: cutscenes, NPCs, shops, inns, side jobs, the tournament and the ending.

Items, help & names100%

All item names and their one-line help texts, place names on the save screen and the twelve episode titles on the World Map.

Menus & interface100%

Main menu, Save, Load, Config, Status, the rename screen and the inn. The only Japanese left is the title logo, and the YES / NO picture in the shop window.

New in this patch

🔤TEXT

A bold English font

The game’s text box now uses a clear, variable-width English font, so a line fits about 33 letters. Lines break at natural points in each sentence, and nothing was cut short to fit the box.

✏️NAMES

English rename screen

Rename your party from System → Rename with an English keyboard (upper case, lower case and symbols, up to 8 letters). Dialogue uses the new names everywhere.

📋MENUS

Tidy menus

Menu entries line up in neat columns, and ON / OFF and Yes / No are written as words instead of spaced-out letters.

📖GUIDE

A complete guide

Our walkthrough uses the same names as the patch, with annotated maps of 235 areas, every chest, every shop price and the condition for the full ending.

How to patch

  1. Get a clean Japanese ROM. You need your own dump of Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight: Lord of Paladin (Japan) (Rev 1): 1,572,864 bytes (1.5 MB), no copier header. Check it before patching:
    CRC32 2740560B
    SHA-1 9c063ee178a8b142a10bc7fbfc3661fa6f4278c5
If the file is 1,573,376 bytes it has a 512-byte header; remove it first (Rom Patcher JS can do this for you). The first cartridge release (Rev 0) has a different checksum and won’t work. We can’t share ROMs, so please don’t ask.
  2. Download and unzip the patch. Inside is Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight - Lord of Paladin (English) v1.0.bps and a readme.
  3. Apply the BPS. The easiest way is Rom Patcher JS in your browser: choose the ROM, choose the .bps, click Apply patch. On desktop you can also use Floating IPS (Flips).
  4. Check the result. The patched ROM is 2 MB (expanded to make room for the English text):
    CRC32 55CC0F32
    SHA-1 1a702a88b65235b3556445d526199f1e68010b0f
  5. Play. Tested in Snes9x. The patched game is a normal 2 MB LoROM, so other accurate emulators and flash carts should run it too, but we haven’t tested them yet.

Start a new game. Saves from the Japanese version store names in Japanese and will show garbled names in the English patch.

Known issues

  • The title logo is the original Japanese one.
  • The YES / NO in the shop window is a picture in the original and stays as it was.
  • Only tested in Snes9x so far. If it misbehaves in another emulator or on hardware, please tell us which one.

Found a typo or a line that reads oddly? Leave a comment below with where it happened (a screenshot helps) and it’ll be fixed.

Guides for this game

We also wrote a full English guide that uses the same names as the patch:

FAQ

Is the translation complete?

Yes. Every line of dialogue, every menu and every item description is in English, from the opening to the ending. Only the title logo is still in Japanese.

Is there more than one ending?

Yes. Win all five bouts of the Grand Tournament, dealing clearly more damage than you take, and you get the full ending. The secrets page has the exact rule.

Why is the patched ROM bigger than the original?

English takes more space than Japanese, so the ROM is expanded from 1.5 MB to 2 MB to hold the new text and font.

My emulator shows a black screen or garbage.

Check the patched ROM against the CRC32 above. If it doesn’t match, your original ROM was not the clean Rev 1 version or still had a header.

Can I upload the patch to another site?

Not without permission. Please share the link to this page instead, so everyone gets the latest version. If you’d like to host or mirror it, email gametranslate.us@gmail.com. Pre-patched ROMs must never be shared: the game itself still belongs to its owners.

Sharing & redistribution

Kudos, chief, on yet another SNES jewel translated into english. Werent you already busy with SRW-F? Hmm… Maybe you found time for this, during your coffee breaks…🙂 Keep up the great work!
Like others, I’ve tried repeatedly to download tour patch from your link, but it seems impossible due to the constant barrage of pop-ups, at least on a smartphone. 🤷

Haha, thanks a lot, my friend! 😄

Actually, I’ve already finished SRW F! I just haven’t released it yet because I still feel the translation could be better. It’s fully translated, but I want to give it another polishing pass before putting it out there.

So, while taking a little break from SRW F, I decided to work on this game instead. Interestingly, it was made by the same development team behind *Rejoice – Aretha Oukoku no Kanata*, which I’d already translated. The two games share quite a lot of similarities in their engines and internal structures, so I was able to reuse much of the technical work I’d already done for Rejoice. That made the whole process go surprisingly fast!

And thanks for letting me know about the download issue. I’ll take a look at the link and see what I can do about those annoying pop-ups, especially for mobile users.

      Thanks again for the support!

@Game Translate I managed to download it eventually. The thing is, the page with the download link is easily confused with the ad pages, and the actual link appears way down at the bottom.

I’ve thoroughly tested SRW-R, and the translation is really excellent. If you were to add the english title graphics as well, that would be the icing on the cake.

Just a heads-up: a beta patch for *Super Tokusatsu Taisen 2001* (PSX) was released a few days ago (in case you were thinking of translating it) and the translation is already great. The quality of the AI has improved by leaps and bounds lately. But for now, it’s only available on Discord.
